Beginning in Fall 2025, I step into the role of Area Head for Painting and Drawing, serving as the primary point of contact for faculty within the area and as a vital link between area faculty and school leadership. In this capacity, I work closely with the Director, Associate Director, and Studio Division Head to ensure clear, consistent communication, relaying information to faculty and staff as needed and advocating for the needs, priorities, and long-term vision of the area. Central to this role is a collaborative approach: I work in consultation with area faculty to strengthen the identity of Painting and Drawing and to advance its future goals. This includes promoting the area in coordination with the School’s Outreach and Engagement Committee and through appropriate public-facing platforms, including social media.
As Area Head, I organize, schedule, and facilitate the full range of meetings that sustain the area’s academic and community life. These include regular area faculty meetings, area TA meetings, and monthly “all studio” meetings that bring together BFA students, graduate students, faculty, and Studio Specialists. I solicit agenda items, chair these meetings, and help ensure that they function as productive spaces for communication, planning, and shared decision-making. Each semester, I also prepare the area course schedule in consultation with the SAAHD office and the ADEO/DEO, balancing curricular needs, faculty expertise, and student demand.
A significant part of my role involves stewardship of the Painting and Drawing curriculum. I oversee the evaluation and ongoing maintenance of the curriculum in collaboration with the Studio Division Head, the ADEO/DEO, and the Curriculum Committee. When appropriate, I initiate proposals for new courses, revisions to existing offerings, or broader curricular updates, developing these collaboratively with area faculty and advancing them through established review and approval processes. Through my service on the Studio Division Curriculum Committee—alongside other Area Heads, the Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, and academic advisors—I contribute directly to the assessment, alignment, and long-term development of undergraduate and graduate curricula across the Division.
In close collaboration with the Studio Specialist, I assess materials, classroom needs, equipment requests, and other infrastructure considerations essential to the area’s teaching and research. Together, we prioritize and draft Instructional Equipment requests in the fall and Student Technology Fee requests in the spring, advocating for resources that support both pedagogical goals and student learning experiences. I also chair the Graduate Admissions Committee for Painting and Drawing, managing admissions-related documentation and representing the area in Scholarship Committee meetings. In addition, I serve as the primary faculty point of contact for graduate TAs, providing supervision and mentorship, conducting annual TA reviews, and, when appropriate, delegating aspects of this work to other area faculty.
Taken together, my work as Area Head for Painting and Drawing is grounded in collaboration, communication, and care for both people and programs. Through administrative leadership, curricular stewardship, resource planning, and advocacy, I aim to support faculty and students while guiding the area toward a dynamic and sustainable future.
